UK/Australia Pipeline Established After some months of planning, the Chief Executives of APESMA and Prospect in the UK have set up a joint venture to create what, in effect, will be a pipeline between the two countries for recruitment of professional and technical staff.
The concept came about through, directly and indirectly, a number of professional individuals and executives of professional associations querying the ad hoc nature of recruitment in areas where significant shortages existed.
APESMA and the Institution of Civil Engineers in the UK had already established sound recruitment operations designed as key services to their professional membership as well as commercial enterprises. Concern existed about the capability of recruitment agencies and other bodies to conduct specialised recruitment for highly technical roles and it was felt there was a significant lack in many areas of this commercial sector.
Following the establishment of their own recruitment entities, the focus still tended to be on their own countries. APESMA had already made some forays into the UK but it was obvious that the lack of its own presence in the UK militated against sound value propositions for its clients and potential clients. Despite this, it was well received by those organisations it approached.
The Board of APESMA was very concerned to foster sound recruitment opportunities for recent graduates, many of whom have the intention to work overseas in the early years of their careers..
With the recognised skill shortages emerging in the professional, scientific and technical arenas, it was obvious that there was a significant need for ETM to have a presence in both countries and thus provide a pipeline between the two. It had been noted that the Immigration requirements across the two countries had been made a lot easier to work within and, indeed, the Federal Government of Australia had even located key immigration officials within organisations to foster much freer movement to overcome skills’ shortages.
The culmination of this exercise has been a joint venture between APESMA and Prospect in the UK together with the key objective of fostering even stronger relationships across a range of professional bodies in the UK and Europe . The initiative has been supported in the short term, by the IEE in the UK and discussions are underway with other bodies. The sharing of websites and overall capability will mean that the joint venture will indirectly and directly have access to hundreds of thousands of individuals, all who embrace these key professions.
This will mean, in the short and longer term, much easier movement between countries and enhanced career opportunities for professionals on a global basis.
These philosophies underpin the setting up of ETM UK and seem aligned to the philosophies of Governments in both Australia and the UK.
